A period or menstruation is the release of blood from a girl’s vagina, which lasts for a few days. It is important to note that an average girl will get her first period between 10-16 years, but if that is not the case, the girl is expected to visit a gynecologist. Menstruation occurs in a female’s body when an egg that passes through the fallopian tube to the uterus fails to be fertilized, the uterus lining breaks, which causes bleeding. A period generally lasts for 3-8 days, but it varies from person to person.
On the topic of menstrual hygiene, employees from ‘Whisper’ went to national and international institutions in Nepal to spread awareness about feminine care and menstrual hygiene. Ms. Kritina Shakya, assistant manager, Whisper Nepal, visited Premier International IB World School to educate the female students of MYP (Middle Years Program) on 5th May 2022 in the school executive hall. Whisper Nepal as a company manufactures menstrual pads (sanitary napkins) and panty liners. She explained why menstruation occurs, how to maintain proper hygiene, the appropriate diet to take, appropriate ways to deal with period cramps, and the proper use of sanitary pads. Ms. Kritina also showed the difference between cotton and gel pads through an experiment. In her experiment, she poured red liquid on both pads, while the gel pad absorbed the liquid, the cotton pad leaked reflecting a stain on its backside. This was followed by a question-and-answer session.
The orientation on menstrual hygiene was very helpful for the young girls who already started menstruating and for those who were yet to start. This availed the participants an opportunity to know how to handle their period more efficiently. There was a free distribution of Whisper gel sanitary pads by Ms. Kritina and her colleagues to all the participants and teachers present.
